The artistic wood processing is another skill that represents a constant value in the Romanian traditional art. The wood always constituted a sensitive material used by the local craftsmen with ability as well as with artistic feeling. The decoration is made with simple tools (hammer, chisel, axe, penknife). Colors are not used making evident the natural features of the wood essence. The ornamental motifs used may be: geometrical (spirals, the incised circle, the square, the rhombus, the rope, the circle arch), zoomorphic (the serpent representation), the vegetal decorations (fir tree branches, leaf, flower), anthropomorphic (compositions realised through incisions that usually represent the shepherd with his sheep), cosmical, freely drawn and mixed. In Bucovina, the village Fundu Moldovei is famous for artistic wood exploitation and for the folkloric instruments made here.
