Poluarea Bucovinei

Folk Costumes

The folk costume is a part of the larger sphere of the traditional Romanian costume, whose unity is obvious in the way it is cut, in the decoration and in the coloring. The folk costume is still worn in the Romanian villages, especially in Bucovina and Maramures. The embroidery has a certain significance that differs from one region to another. The men and the women do not have the same embroidery or the same cut of their folk shirts. In some regions of the country the colours combinations are strictly kept as imposed by the tradition.
The folk costume from Bucovina, excels from the point of view of the decoration through simplcity and sobriety, the main colours being reduced most of the times to red, black and white, although more recently other colours have been added (combination of orange and blue, in the North of Moldavia). The variety of the national costume marked by specific features concerning the decoration and the cut, is also manifested from the point of view of the structure that differs from a region to another.

Black Ceramics

The traditional Romanian pottery is among the most beautiful in Europe. The ceramics articles distinguish through the forms’ elegance and the decoration. The traditional ceramics are shaped at the pottery wheel. Its burning is usually made in horizontal stoves through two techniques: with oxidation and without oxidation. As a result it is obtained the red and the black ceramics. The folkloric pottery gathers traditional elements marked by the life conditions and by the evolution of the aesthetic taste. In Moldavia there is much variety in the ceramics forms and characteristics of the old Greek-Roman ceramics are also present. The decoration of the ceramics vases is sober and the chromatics are reduced to a few main colours, which gives the ceramics from this region, a special feature. Highly appreciated are the vases from black ceramics made at Marginea in Suceava County (black ceramics, stone polished).

Painted Eggs

Egg decoration is very popular in the Romanian tradition. The painted eggs are a testimony of the Easter customs, believes and habits, representing an element of spiritual culture characteristic to Romania and nearby countries.
In Bucovina, more than anywhere else, painting eggs is raised to the art level. The folkloric motifs used can be found in all the Romanian symbolism: the sun, the leaf and as a reconfirmation of our christianity, the cross. The egg decoration does not end on painting, there are many techniques used and some of them are kept secret. Although nowadays there are a lot of new chemical paints, some prefer to do it in the traditional way, like using onion peels to get orange or red colors. Real leaves are sometimes applied to the egg’s surface and after the painting they are removed, leaving a natural shape on the egg.

Artistic sewing and weaving

The Romanian folk art is especially famous for the numerous traditional skills: weaving, the wood’s artistic processing, the icon painting, the eggs colouring, pottery, the folk masks’ manufacturing. The artistic weaving has a special place in the traditional handicraft art. The artistic weaving and sewing are skills learned in the family from generation to generation and represented a part of the Romanian woman’s main occupation. From the daily clothes to those for special occasions and to the textiles that “dressed” their house, everything was made by the hard-working hands of the Romanian women from the village. The materials used are: the cotton, the natural silk, the flax, the wool, especially for the textiles for the interior (towels, carpets).

The handmade textures can be executed using very complicated techniques, high quality pieces being obtained. The homemade carpets are often used inside the house, on the walls for decoration. In Moldova there are different types of carpets: kilim and oriental. The oriental type, also named “rug” is different by the traditional oriental carpet through the smaller density of the knots and the bigger length of the threads.

Regarding the decoration, the rugs in Moldavia, have more pronounced borders with models representing little branches that repeat in ranges in order to create a life tree. Famous centres for the traditional artistic textures exist in Bucovina at Ciocanesti and Carlibaba.

Artistic wood crafting

The artistic wood processing is another skill that represents a constant value in the Romanian traditional art. The wood always constituted a sensitive material used by the local craftsmen with ability as well as with artistic feeling. The decoration is made with simple tools (hammer, chisel, axe, penknife). Colors are not used making evident the natural features of the wood essence. The ornamental motifs used may be: geometrical (spirals, the incised circle, the square, the rhombus, the rope, the circle arch), zoomorphic (the serpent representation), the vegetal decorations (fir tree branches, leaf, flower), anthropomorphic (compositions realised through incisions that usually represent the shepherd with his sheep), cosmical, freely drawn and mixed. In Bucovina, the village Fundu Moldovei is famous for artistic wood exploitation and for the folkloric instruments made here.
